At Bartenfelder Sanitation, our goal has always been simple: provide reliable, high-quality service at fair and predictable pricing.

However, the waste industry is heavily dependent on diesel fuel. Our trucks operate daily across Harford County and surrounding areas, and fluctuations in fuel costs directly impact the cost of providing service.

To maintain consistent service quality and avoid frequent base rate increases, Bartenfelder Sanitation has implemented a Fuel Surcharge Program tied to publicly available diesel fuel pricing.

How the Fuel Surcharge Works

Bartenfelder Sanitation uses the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) U.S. On-Highway Diesel Fuel Price — East Coast (PADD 1) as the benchmark for fuel pricing.

Baseline Fuel Price

Baseline Diesel Price: $4.50 per gallon

• When diesel fuel remains at or below $4.50 per gallon, no fuel surcharge will apply

• When diesel fuel exceeds $4.50 per gallon, a fuel surcharge may be applied based on the table below

How Often Is It Adjusted?

• Fuel surcharge is reviewed monthly

• Any changes will be based on average diesel pricing over the prior period

• Adjustments may increase, decrease, or be removed entirely depending on market conditions

 

Why a Fuel Surcharge Instead of Raising Prices?

Fuel surcharges allow us to:

• Keep base service rates lower

• Adjust fairly based on real market conditions

• Avoid frequent permanent price increases

• Remove surcharges when fuel prices decline

This approach ensures pricing remains fair, transparent, and market-based.
